Huge video game news/previews from E3

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 by Amber

It's been a week of HUGE news coming out of the E3 conference in LA, so let's get you a run-down of all the news!

There is a god, and his name is Miyamoto: In the biggest news of the day, gaming genius and Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto has announced the development of a new Zelda game. Can you even stand it? A moment of revered awe is totally appropriate.

Tony Hawk is hawking a skateboard-shaped controller for the XBox game RIDE. Anyone interested in shredding carpet?

The new Star Wars game, 'Old Republic,' is stuffed full of meaningful dialogue, NPCs and tons of Jedi-on-Jedi action. And by that, we mean action sequences and light-sabers. And by that, we mean Bring It On!

Fan of the LEGO games? Good news -- everyone's favorite boy-wizard is hitting the blocks from Sorcerer's Stone through Goblet of Fire. Def. one to check out.

Nintendo debuted a new Wii Fit to help get us all trim. Look for it to not be on a single self as soon as it's released. If you see it, buy it!

No more Xbox controllers??

Altair has competition in the 'ultra hot bad-boy hero' category: Fresh from Ubisoft Montreal is the next chapter in the Assassin's Creed story -- this one takes place on the maze-like streets of Venice in the 15th century.

Whoa. 'Mass Effect 2'?? I have no words except: Welcome back, Commander Shepherd -- you've been missed! This game was totally awesome in its scope. I had to actually take pages of written notes on the different planetary systems ... I'm so excited!

And, in all, who was the winner of E3? Our friends over at CNet have the titillating answer...

E3 Roundup!

Monday, June 1, 2009 by Amber

News is coming out of E3 fast and furious, and we've got a roundup of the best stories and top shockers:

Sony is incessantly teasing the public with peeks at it's PSP Go -- a portable version of the (somewhat disastrous) gaming system. Hopefully this can pull Sony out of its gaming rut!

Our friends over at Game Hunters break down the top 5 gaming companies who've made tsunami-esque announcements in previous years, including a preview of what we can expect.

In similar yet unrelated video games news, the Guinness Book of World Records is set to announce at E3 that Call of Duty 4 is officially the most played online video game in history. Cool beans for all you 20-30-ish guys who've stayed up countless hours to shoot up your buddies. Well done!

... Also making headlines in the digital world is Microsoft's new BING search tool. Publicly available on Wednesday, the engine offers a stunning picture as its homepage, fantastic search results as its destination and plenty of interesting little bits along the way. Next time you go to type 'Google' into the URL, try out www.Bing.com -- oh, and Microsoft is going to bombard you with some advertising in the coming weeks to cement that it's search engine is the best. Truth be told ... it kinda is.

Microsoft's BING and Google WAVE hit the stage

Friday, May 29, 2009 by Amber

Rainy days in Boston = lazy hours of staring out streaky windows waiting for the day to brighten. But then again, I'm sure that's everywhere... To help pass the hours until the sun peeks out again, let's check out these headlines...

Who's getting excited?? Digital Trends has a wind-up story on the E3 Show next week! I'm so excited to see all the game peeks we'll get out of this show. Reports have it that it will be back, true to form from its glory days, this year -- a drastic and much-welcomed format change from the booooring show it had become in the last few years.

Have you heard the hype over Bing, the second-gen search engine from Microsoft? Looks like it's won over some pretty tough critics who admit it's better than Google in almost every single way. I totally can't wait to try it! Maybe y'all don't search that often, but I'm constantly on Live.com looking up distinctly non-work-related things, so this'll be a great update for me.

Meanwhile, over in Google-Land, announcements are out about the new Google Wave, a real-time communications initiative by google to speed up Gmail and integrate IM functionality and stuff. Sounds cool, and looks even cooler.

This story would have my 3-year-old in fits of geeky glee -- were he able to rad or properly understand the concepts involved: A group of engineers are totally trying to *make* a working, functioning version of Pixar's dystopian hero WALL-E. Oh man... now for the rest of the day I'm going to doing my spot-on 'Wall-EE!" "Eeee-vah" impressions...

OK, I'm not one for online videos, I've just never latched onto the YouTube sensation -- probably because I know I'd like it too much. But, I was intrigued by the headline on this story from our friends at PopSci: "How Does That Bed of Nails Really Feel?" I took 10th grade Physics, so I understand completely how, through the distribution of weight, a squishy human being can lay atop a sharp bed of nails without turning into a shish-kabob. But, the video accompanying the headline was pretty cool just at the end. Ouch, buddy, that had to hurt.

... And the leaves outside are now glowing with lemony-lime greenness as the sun finally makes an appearance. I'm going to head outside for a walk before the clouds come back, so to all you out there in geekland, have a great weekend and I'll see you Monday!

Redmond Announces New Zune!

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 by Amber

It's been a long week without you all, my friends! Funny, though, seems like everything went into techno-hibernation while we were gone. Let's take a look at some of the few stories out there to check out ...

Looking for some E3 news? Here's a story about a new game that flips the world upside down!

Woo hoo! I knew they had it in them: Microsoft has announced plans for a Zune HD that comes with web-browsing capabilities to finally take on the iPod Touch.

Scientists have gained a heightened understanding of pulsars and now think they could work more like 'galactic GPS.'

First IBM took on the world of chess with Big Blue, now it's battling an even tougher opponent: Alex Trebek. That's right, IBM says it can create a machine that would rock the house of 'Jeopardy' ... and in other news, check out the geektastic ad for DnD at the bottom of the page!

Well, turns out this ep is going to be abbreviated. Until Friday, never split the party! :)

E3 burnout

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 by Amber

Gamer's paradise E3 is underway right now -- why then can't I get myself excited about it?

Perhaps it's the lack of interesting E3 stories coming out of the conference, or maybe I'm just on video-game burnout. There's only so much Lego Star Wars and Lego Indy action I can take before my eyes glaze over, and my house has been kiddo central for the past week.

Hopefully ComicCon, set to open later this month, will have a few more fun tidbits I can share.

Instead, I offer up a fun Internet quiz on Doshas that I came across on Lime.com. According to the site...

'Ayurveda, from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit, literally means 'Knowledge of Life.' Ayurveda is the practice of maintaining health and healing sickness with lifestyle modifications and natural remedies. The Ayurvedic approach names three basic energies or doshas that exist in all of us: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person is said to be a unique combination of these three doshas, and each dosha has a specific function in the body. According to Ayurveda, we are most healthy when our doshas are balanced.'

I'm a Pitta/Kapha, mix, BTW.

Anyways, just a morsel of knowledge to fill your mind up while waiting for Microsoft to announce a Netflix deal or news that would be similarly exciting. I'll keep you posted.
