Cake-walk for gamers at IGN

Friday, August 15, 2008 by Amber

My site of the week is cake-walk for all you gamers: IGN.com – a ‘come one, come all’ hub that offers gaming news, reviews and, best of all, cheats.

Seriously, you can only play the same scene sequence so many times before you want to throw the controller through your flat screen LCD – take a breath and log on to get hints and walkthroughs, then tackle the Ferris wheel pick-up from Call of Duty 4 again. For the 15th time in 10 minutes. It’s ok, you’re among friends.

Best of all, if first-person shooters aren’t your thing, they have a full treasure search for the new Indiana Jones Legos game – and if you want to break free of the gaming genre altogether, they have sweet features on poppy TV shows, movies, trade shows, etc., for you to feast on. Enjoy!

E3 burnout

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 by Amber

Gamer's paradise E3 is underway right now -- why then can't I get myself excited about it?

Perhaps it's the lack of interesting E3 stories coming out of the conference, or maybe I'm just on video-game burnout. There's only so much Lego Star Wars and Lego Indy action I can take before my eyes glaze over, and my house has been kiddo central for the past week.

Hopefully ComicCon, set to open later this month, will have a few more fun tidbits I can share.

Instead, I offer up a fun Internet quiz on Doshas that I came across on Lime.com. According to the site...

'Ayurveda, from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit, literally means 'Knowledge of Life.' Ayurveda is the practice of maintaining health and healing sickness with lifestyle modifications and natural remedies. The Ayurvedic approach names three basic energies or doshas that exist in all of us: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person is said to be a unique combination of these three doshas, and each dosha has a specific function in the body. According to Ayurveda, we are most healthy when our doshas are balanced.'

I'm a Pitta/Kapha, mix, BTW.

Anyways, just a morsel of knowledge to fill your mind up while waiting for Microsoft to announce a Netflix deal or news that would be similarly exciting. I'll keep you posted.

Video-game geeks to wed

Tuesday, April 15, 2008 by Amber

The second in today's apparent series on video games is this story out of N.J.:

A guy reprogrammed his girlfriend's copy of "Bejeweled" so that it would display a ring and a proposal when she hit a certain score. Well, she played, she scored, and then he scored big when she said yes. No word on wedding details, but I'm sure it'll be geek-tastic!

How cool would a Charm City wedding cake be for this couple?

How to make video games

by Amber

This is a nod to all you hard-core gaming geeks out there that sit in front of double monitors control-room-style and dream of a newer and better RPG to go home to. Why let someone else show you their idea of a great game when you have to smarts to make one yourself?

I know, you can't just quit your job and run back to gaming school, but maybe a quick trip to your local chain bookstore will get your blood pumping -- try picking up a game programming book and teaching yourself how to make your own 3-D world come to life.

Either way, check out this article off Forbes.com to get a handle on the video game industry and how to break into it horizontally.

Just a thought...
