Go Pink in October!

Friday, October 9, 2009 by Amber

This October is the 25th Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and everyone is coming out in support of the cause. The NFL donned bright pink accessories for last weekend's games as a BCA 'Kick-Off' -- and we at Byte-Sized want to help as best we can!

For the duration of the month, we'll be highlighting pink products whose profits (or a portion of profits) go to support breast cancer research, prevention and promotion!

Now, all of us gadget-aholics know that every one worth their salt comes in a shade of the girliest pink. Don't be fooled! It might be great to should your support with the color alone, but if you're gunna spend the money, why not go for something that actually helps make a real difference?

Today, we're tackling e-readers -- a topic near and dear to my little pink heart :)

SON'y ereader and viao for Breast Cancer Awareness MonthSony is offering a special Sony Reader Breast Cancer Research Foundation bundle that includes the pink Reader Pocket Edition, a gold clutch cover accessory and a Sony eBook Store coupon code for the free download of a four-book collection about the disease and the women that have overcome it, all for the price of the Reader Pocket Edition. The company is also offering a pink Vaio laptop with pink mouse and carrying case.

Sony will donate $110,000 to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in connection with the sale of these products. To purchase either of them, visit SonyStyle.com.

On the Kindle front, in direct contradiction with my above statement on color variations, my favoritest of all gadgets still comes in minimalist white, but what about a fashionable case with a conscience?

M-Edge Accessories, a developer of protective covers and accessories for eReaders like Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, has just launched a new light pink Kindle Prodigy jacket created specially for this month. The company will donate 10% of each sale of the light pink jacket to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It retails for $44.99.

Thanks everyone, and have a great weekend!

Study Agrees that Kindle Really is the Green Solution!

Friday, August 28, 2009 by Amber

Good Friday afternoon, everyone! I've been dreadful about updating lately -- as was so nicely pointed out to me last night by a fan over a steak dinner -- so here's a fresh set of headlines for you all to look at while waiting for the weekend to begin!

** Before we get started, though, I had the pleasure of working off-site on assignment today covering the Ted Kennedy memorial service and public viewing in downtown Boston at the JFK Library. For a photo gallery of the Captivate screens on the event that we've been covering all day, visit us on Facebook! The album should be up soon ... And, I also tweeted the event while I was walking and talking, so follow us on Twitter to read the details!

On, now back to your regularly scheduled programming ...

- The folks at Twitter tried to have the word 'tweet' trademarked, but were turned down by the patent department because it could confusion with other usages. Yeah, I'm sure all those birds would have been *so* upset.

- People sure do idolize Apple -- so what's really hiding in the gadget-maker's closet? Here is a list of Apple's worst products that just makes me smile. :) See?

- Looking for a time-waster and want to expand your horizons? Then check out this list of the world's most unique gadgets!

- OK, the headline on this story made me pause to take a look ... but now that I did, I'm not sure I like the idea of hacking elevators to go faster. Aside from the business aspect of it sort-a being what Captivate does, isn't that dangerous to mess with an elevator? Uhh ...

- It's that time of the year again -- so check here for all the tools CNET says you'll need to get the most out of your fantasy football season!

- I've felt so good about my Kindle since I got it back in April, and now I feel even better environmentally for it, too! Claims suggesting the Kindle is better for the Earth than paper books are true! So, what are you still waiting for?

-In political news, a new bill is being considered that will give the president special powers in the the event of a cyber security emergency. I'm sure that bill means that it will give the president's white-hat-hackers and/or the White House's computer guy (think back to the SNL skit for a visual) -- because what the heck could Obama do in a cyber-emergency?

OK, be sure to check back here Monday for a new post and some new headlines! Have a great weekend!

Kindle news burns followers

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 by Amber

Hello all -- So sorry I've been MIA for the last week!

After a horrible bout of the stomach flu (And being tested for swine flu) I'm back and ready to go! First on my list is the newest story that has me fuming:

In a press conference earlier today, Amazon.com announced the new Kindle DX, an update to the super-popular e-reader with a screen 2.7x larger than that of the Kindle 2.

Um, Amazon, would it be, like, possible for me to bask in the wondrous non-glow of my brand-freakin-new Kindle 2 for more than 2 weeks before you pull the rug out from under me? Seriously, how dare you intro a new Kindle after you just released an update in February?? That sounds like the worst PR I've ever heard of.

Amazon says the new version is better for reading PDFs, cookbooks and newspapers -- but I say it's a scam. Know how much it costs? $489!! Now, pick your jaw up. There is an upside: The company will be testing the new larger screen version at five colleges this fall for possible use in the sale of textbooks.

On the plus side, if you have a spare $380 (including a carrying case), buy yourself one of those "older" version kindles like I just got *15 days ago* -- it's my new best friend.

See you all on Friday :)

Will Serenity really have a space-based home?

Wednesday, March 4, 2009 by Amber

We're just going to have a short entry today -- not too much going on in the world of tech. But first...

Exciting news! This coming Monday (March 9) we will be kicking off our Byte-Sized Spring Cleaning Giveaway, featuring some fantastic, work-friendly, cubicle-must-haves from our friends over at Dream Cheeky! My fellow editors and I have personally tested some of its awesome USB-powered devices and will be featuring the reviews during the giveaway. Trust me, you're not going to want to miss this!

Now, on to some top headlines in the tech world ...

Cool auction alert: Ever wonder what's on a celebrity's iPod? Well, this auction gets you one better -- for pretty fair prices (at the moment), you can bid to buy a real star's iPod, including those from Scarlett Johanssen, Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, Marc Jacobs (currently highest) and Bill Clinton. The auction site, Tonic.com, even has a preview list of the songs loaded on the players -- though I'm not sure most fanboys care about the songs so much as it was actually touched by ScarJo. But I can't guarantee that -- damn the digital age :)

OK, Firefly fans -- I know you are out there. And, if you don't know what Firefly is ... well then you either just aren't a true geek (sorry) or you must go buy the entire Firefly series now. Anyways, for you fans, NASA is looking to name Node 3 on the International Space Station and it looking for *your* input: one of the choices? Serenity. Srsly. Go vote now! The answer will be revealed in April. I'll be sure to keep you updated!

Lastly, for the biggest news of the day, Amazon.com has announced it will be releasing an iPod Touch and iPhone version of its Kindle software. So, you're in luck if you have one of those geeky gadgets -- in one free download, you're also getting a smaller-screened version of the oh-so-popular Kindle 2!

OK, that's all for me today -- see you all on Friday!
